We are looking for talented PhD Students (DEADLINE is July 14 2014) to pursue their graduate career at IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca in Computer Science and Engineering. IMT is active in the areas of computer science, control and optimization, and image analysis. As part of the IMT PhD Programs 2014/15 recruitment of PhD students, we invite applications for interested PhD students in the curriculum of Image Analysis.

We welcome applicants from a variety of backgrounds that satisfy formal criteria and are interested in pursuing their PhD in any aspect of image analysis, such as computer vision problems (segmentation and registration), image restoration, and data mining. They will join a rapidly growing and interdisciplinary group that collaborates with a variety of laboratories across the world to develop new methods for image analysis based on machine learning and the discovery of patterns in multidimensional datasets arising in imaging problems in natural and life sciences (e.g., Cardiac MRI). For their thesis, the students will have access to a large collection of datasets from a variety of biomedical imaging domains. In addition, students will have the opportunity to visit for a period abroad the collaborating laboratories when pursuing their dissertation.

Overall, students should have a good mathematical and programming background and excellent communication skills (in English). Students should demonstrate enthusiasm for performing applied research in an interdisciplinary Research Unit.

In total 36 scholarships will be awarded across all IMT disciplines. The absolute number of funded positions awarded to the curriculum on Image Analysis depends on the quality of the candidates.

The location of our institution (IMT) is in Lucca, in the heart of Tuscany, Italy. IMT offers an excellent PhD program with great benefits and competitive stipend (if awarded scholarship or paid by research grant). All students eat at the school cafeteria for free and highly qualified students stay for free at the school dorms. All teaching is in English. For more information on IMT and student benefits see Campus

The deadline for applications was July 14, 2014 and all applicants must apply here through the IMT portal.

Post Doctoral Fellow in Computer Vision and Machine Learning

We are currently recruiting for a Post-Doctoral Fellow position in Computer Vision and Machine Learning.

We have funding from the EU to investigate the formulation of (active and semi-supervised) learning problems for object segmentation and detection, where variants of the object appear many times (often occluded and under affine transformations) in the scene. These problems are commonly encountered in cell characterization and phenotyping, plant phenotyping, and nano-particle characterization.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and strongly motivated researcher to join PRIAn - Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis Unit (http://prian.imtlucca.it/) within IMT Lucca, and propose innovative approaches to the above problems. He/she will have the opportunity to collaborate and interact with our partners in Europe, USA, and Australia.

The candidate will join our rapidly growing and interdisciplinary group, that collaborates with a variety of laboratories across the world to investigate new approaches for image analysis (segmentation, detection, tracking) and the discovery of patterns in multidimensional datasets arising in imaging problems in natural and life sciences.

Candidates should have a PhD in computer vision, machine learning, signal processing, image analysis or related areas. A good record of international publications demonstrating prior experience is required. The candidate should have good programming skills, a strong mathematical background, and an interest in bridging the gap to the biological/natural sciences.

We offer competitive salary packages and several benefits. More information regarding the position, as well as the online application form, can be found here: Application Form

Informal inquiries regarding the position can be addressed to Prof. Sotirios Tsaftaris, s.tsaftaris@imtlucca.it

The deadline for applications is February 28 2014 (midday).

IMT strives to establish itself as a research center that promotes cutting-edge research in key areas, structuring its PhD Program in close connection to research, to attract top students, researchers and scholars through competitive international selections, and to contribute to technological innovation, economic growth and social development.

Post Doctoral Fellow in Medical Image Analysis

We are currently recruiting for a Post-Doctoral Fellow position in Medical Image Analysis.

We recently obtained funding from the National Institutes of Heath (USA) to investigate new non-invasive techniques of cardiovascular imaging with MRI together with partners from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, University of California Los Angeles (California, USA), and Siemens. We are particularly interested in unsupervised methods of analyzing such datasets to characterize cardiac disease, based on sparse space-time decompositions. Similar problems are encountered in functional MRI of the brain.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and strongly motivated researcher to join the PRIAn - Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis Unit (http://prian.imtlucca.it/) within IMT Lucca and to propose innovative approaches to cardiovascular image analysis. He/she will have the opportunity to visit and collaborate with our partners.

Candidates should have a PhD in computer vision, medical image analysis, machine learning, signal processing, or related areas. Prior experience in cardiac/brain registration and segmentation will be considered a plus. A good record of international publications demonstrating prior experience is required. The candidate should have good programming skills, a strong mathematical background, and an interest in bridging the gap to the life sciences.
